“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
(Luke 4:18-19, quoted from Isaiah 61:1-2)
Our Lord taught that we are to love God first followed by loving one another. Neither have we learned to do very well. There remains in the world both physical and mental oppression. I have a friend who remains caught in an unjust judicial system. He has been held in prison for almost 19 months now without trial or conviction. All of the evidence points to his innocence yet there he remains. I am praying for a miracle for him this Christmas season that he will know the reality of the promise of this scripture and the words of this song. I chose the video that is attached to this blog because it is sung by a Filipino group. My friend is Filipino. Join your prayers with me that our Lord will set at liberty him who is oppressed. For we know that “in his name all oppression shall cease.”
O HOLY NIGHT!
O Holy Night! The stars are brightly shining,
It is the night of our dear Savior’s birth.
Long lay the world in sin and error pining.
Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth.
A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices,
For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.
Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!
O night divine, O night when Christ was born.
O night, O Holy Night, O night divine!
O night, O Holy Night, O night divine!
Truly He taught us to love one another,
His law is love and His gospel is peace.
Chains shall he break, for the slave is our brother.
And in his name all oppression shall cease.
Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,
Let all within us praise His holy name.
Christ is the Lord! O praise his name forever
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
His power and glory ever more proclaim!
